Why Schools and Universities Choose TapVoter

Built with education in mind: simple for students, secure for administrators, and free for everyone.

Free: No Budget Required

School budgets are tight. TapVoter elections cost nothing, so you do not need to submit a purchase order, get IT approval for a software license, or ask the PTA for funding. Just create an account and start.

Easy Enough for Students

If a student can tap a link and enter a code, they can vote on TapVoter. No app downloads, no account creation for voters, no confusing interfaces. The voting page works on phones, Chromebooks, tablets, and school computers.

Secure with Voter Keys

Each eligible voter gets a unique key that works exactly once. No stuffing the ballot box, no voting twice, and no one can see who voted for whom. It is the digital equivalent of a private voting booth.

Ranked Choice Voting

Teach students about real election methods. Instant Runoff Voting, STAR voting, and Approval voting are all available and free. Students learn about ranked preferences, majority winners, and fair election processes.

30 Languages for Diverse Campuses

Serve multilingual student bodies and parent communities with native-language ballots. Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Vietnamese, and 25 more languages are built in, with full RTL support.

Privacy by Design

Student privacy matters. TapVoter separates voter identity from ballot choices. The system records that a voter key was used, but never connects a student to their vote. FERPA-friendly by design.

How Student Elections Work on TapVoter

Four steps from setup to results. Any teacher or advisor can manage it without technical help.

1

Create the Election

A teacher, advisor, or administrator signs up for a free account and creates a new election. Add the election title, description, voting dates, and choose a voting method. Setup takes about 5 minutes.

2

Add Positions & Candidates

Add each position being voted on (President, Vice President, Treasurer, etc.) and the candidates running for each. You can include candidate photos and short bios to help voters decide.

3

Distribute Voter Keys

Generate voter keys for all eligible voters. Share keys via school email, Google Classroom, a QR code on a poster, or hand out printed slips. Each key works exactly once on any device with a web browser.

4

Students Vote & Results Appear

Students enter their voter key at the voting page and cast their ballot in under a minute. Results update in real time or can be hidden until voting closes. Export a CSV for your records or display results at an assembly.

Built for Teachers and Administrators

You have enough on your plate. TapVoter handles the election logistics so you can focus on your students.

5-Minute Setup

No IT department needed. Any teacher or administrator can create an election from scratch in about 5 minutes. The interface is intuitive and self-explanatory.

Real-Time Monitoring

Watch voter participation in real time. See how many voters have cast ballots versus how many keys are outstanding. Identify if you need to send a reminder before voting closes.

CSV Export

Download complete election results in CSV format for your records. Include results in meeting minutes, share with your school board, or archive for governance documentation.

Audit Center

Every election includes a transparency log that records when the election was created, when voting opened and closed, and when results were published. Provides accountability for contested results.

Daily Voting Windows

Restrict voting to school hours so students vote during homeroom or advisory period. Set specific times each day when ballots are accepted and TapVoter enforces the schedule automatically.

Multiple Elections at Once

Run student council, homecoming court, and club elections simultaneously without extra cost. Each election has its own set of voter keys, candidates, and results.

More Than an Election Tool: A Civics Lesson

Student elections are one of the few opportunities young people have to participate in democratic processes before they turn 18. When those elections are run with show-of-hands votes or unprotected Google Forms, students learn that elections are informal and easily manipulated.

TapVoter gives students the experience of a real election: private ballots, verified voter eligibility through unique keys, and transparent results. When you use ranked choice voting, students learn about majority consensus, preference expression, and how modern democracies work.

It costs nothing to give your students this experience. That is the point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TapVoter safe for students to use?

Yes. TapVoter is a web-based platform that does not collect personal information from voters. Students only need a voter key (a code) to vote. They do not create accounts, share email addresses, or provide any identifying information. Ballots are anonymous by design, meaning even the election administrator cannot see who voted for whom. The platform uses HTTPS encryption, Firebase App Check, and reCAPTCHA v3 for security.

Do students need to download an app?

No. TapVoter works in any web browser on any device, including school Chromebooks, personal phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Students go to the voting link, enter their voter key, and cast their ballot. No app store, no installation, no IT department involvement.

How do we prevent students from voting more than once?

Each voter key can only be used once. When a student submits their ballot, the key is marked as used and cannot be used again. You generate exactly the number of keys you need, one per eligible voter. Even if a student shares their key, it can only cast one ballot. The system also prevents multiple submissions from the same session.

Can we restrict voting to specific hours during the school day?

Yes. TapVoter's Daily Voting Windows feature lets you set specific hours each day when voting is open. For example, you could open voting from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM on school days only. Outside those hours, students see a message that voting is currently closed. This is perfect for running elections during homeroom or advisory periods.

Can multiple teachers or advisors manage the same election?

Currently, each election is managed by the account that created it. For schools where multiple advisors need access, you can share the account credentials or have one designated election administrator who manages setup and shares results with the team via CSV export.
